The Complete Handbook of Windows

As a GC working in the northeast, I found the first chapter genuinely useful—the explanation of how windows actually manage heat and water is clearer than anything I've read before. But the later chapters felt rushed. Chapter 3 on selection has good bones but doesn't go deep enough into regional climate differences, and the troubleshooting section in Chapter 5 is pretty thin. Good foundation, but needs more depth for the price.

I appreciated that this avoids marketing speak and gets straight to the technical stuff. The glossary is solid and I've already referenced it twice. My complaint is that some sections assume too much prior knowledge—a facility manager or smaller contractor without years of experience might struggle with the R-value and U-value explanations in Chapter 2. The overall approach is sound, but it could be more accessible without dumbing anything down.

Solid reference for what it is, though I wish there was more about commercial/storefront windows versus residential. The book touches on both but doesn't really drill into the differences in spec'ing, installation, or maintenance. For someone doing mixed work, this gets you part of the way there. Not a bad buy, just more residential-heavy than I'd hoped.

Really well-researched and well-written. The business opportunities chapter gave me ideas I hadn't considered for expanding my service offerings, and the overview of where the industry is heading is genuinely useful for planning. Chapter 1 does a great job explaining why windows matter beyond just looking good. My only wish is that it had a bit more on managing client expectations and communicating window performance—that's something I struggle with. But that's beyond the scope here. Well worth the investment.
