Chapter 1: Understanding Windows
A window is a sealed assembly of glass, frame, and hardware designed to transmit light while controlling the movement of heat, air, and water between the interior and exterior of a building. This simple definition masks a surprisingly complex piece of engineering. To understand windows—and to choose, install, and maintain them effectively—you must first grasp what windows actually do, how they fail, and why the details matter to the buildings and people they serve.
The most common mistake in window selection is treating them as interchangeable commodities. In reality, windows are critical control layers in the building envelope. They are the primary interface between conditioned interior space and uncontrolled exterior environment. That boundary is where most buildings fail. Understanding windows means understanding the physics that governs that boundary.
The Three Functions of a Window
Every window, regardless of type or price, must perform three overlapping jobs. It must admit light and, if operable, allow controlled ventilation. It must resist water intrusion from rain, snow melt, and ground moisture. And it must regulate heat transfer between inside and outside. Most window failures occur when one of these three functions breaks down.
Light and ventilation are the obvious functions. A window lets you see out and, if it opens, lets you control airflow. These are the reasons windows exist. But they are not the only reasons windows matter.
