The Complete Handbook of Wax Paper

I've been buying wax paper for our restaurant for years without really thinking about it, just grabbing whatever was cheapest. This book really opened my eyes to why some rolls were a constant headache. The chapter on types and specifications is worth the price alone - I now understand the difference between dry wax and wet wax and why it matters for our prep work. It's a bit dense in the middle, but it's a reference book, not a novel.

There's a lot of good, solid information here, and I can't argue that it's accurate. However, for a small bakery owner, the level of technical detail feels overwhelming. I already knew a good chunk of the practical stuff, and while the troubleshooting chapter was helpful, a lot of the book is geared a bit more toward huge industrial operations. It's a good book, but I feel like I had to sift through a fair amount to find what was relevant to my daily life.

It is a very thorough book, maybe too thorough for me. I was hoping for more practical tips and tricks for using it in the kitchen, and less, say, on the business of reselling wax paper in bulk. Chapter one was a great introduction, but overall I felt it was aimed more at, like, a factory purchasing manager than a serious home cook. I did learn why my paper sometimes sticks though, so I can't say I regret the purchase.

As a packaging specialist for a food distribution company, I deal with food wraps all day, and this is now my go-to recommendation for new clients asking about the basics. It's clear, factual, and finally explains the distinctions between grades that our suppliers assume we know. Chapter 3's decision framework is spot on and I've even used it to help write a more informed internal buying policy. My only slight gripe is the small font in the glossary, but the content is top-notch.

I bought this on a whim to help with my canning and preserving hobby, and I was shocked by how much there is to know about plain old wax paper. The chapter on how the wax coating actually works was fascinating and helped me understand different techniques. I especially liked that it isn't fluffy or filled with marketing nonsense - it's just straight facts. Deducting one star because I just wish it had a few more photographs or diagrams of some of the applications; the text descriptions were good but sometimes a visual would help.
