I wanted more depth on the actual manufacturing process though; the book tells you what a bladder and carcass are, but I still don't feel like I understand why some brands just don't last. It's a good reference, but it reads a bit like a detailed manual from an equipment manager who was in a hurry. Fine for a coach's shelf, not for an engineer's.

If you're a player or coach it's five stars, but as a small retailer I wanted more specifics on margins and why some brands have stronger resale demand. A decent starting point, but not the final word.

This is the book I've needed on my shelf for years. Every other buying guide I've read is just a top-10 list of what to buy. This is an actual education — the section on how surface texture and grip interact with water dynamics was an eye-opener, and the business chapter gave me a new perspective on offering ball rental to local schools. It handled the nitty-gritty (pressure monitoring, seam wear) without being condescending. If you're a pro or a serious enthusiast, just buy it.
