Water polo balls are not simply smaller, heavier versions of beach balls. They are precisely engineered pieces of sports equipment designed to function at the intersection of human power and fluid mechanics. Understanding what they are requires you to look past the printed logo and the familiar surface pattern. A proper analysis begins with the physical object and ends with the practical consequences for the person throwing, catching, and guarding it.
At its core, a water polo ball is an inflated sphere with an internal bladder and an external carcass. The bladder holds the air, the carcass provides the surface that comes into contact with players' hands and the water's surface, and the seam structure holds the whole thing together.
