The First Clues (1820s–1890s) The story begins with Joseph Fourier's insight that Earth's atmosphere retains heat, followed by Eunice Foote and John Tyndall isolating the gases responsible. In 1896, Svante Arrhenius put numbers to it, calculating how rising CO2 could warm the world.
Measuring the Change (1930s–1960s) Guy Callendar connected fossil fuel burning to observed warming, but proof came when Charles Keeling started tracking atmospheric CO2 at Mauna Loa in 1958. His steadily rising curve became the defining evidence of human impact.
Modeling the Future (1960s–1980s) Manabe and Wetherald's pioneering computer models turned climate into a predictive science. By 1988, the IPCC was founded and James Hansen's Senate testimony pushed global warming into the public and political spotlight.
