Tribes and Kings The story begins with Israelite communities settling the Canaanite highlands around 1200 BC. Within two centuries, David forged a united kingdom and made Jerusalem its capital, while his son Solomon crowned it with the First Temple.
Division and Exile A divided realm followed, with the northern Kingdom of Israel falling to Assyria in 722 BC and Judah enduring until Babylon razed the Temple in 586 BC. The Babylonian exile and the Persian-era return reshaped Jewish identity and gave rise to the Second Temple.
Revolt and Rome Independence flared under the Maccabees, but Rome absorbed Judea by 63 BC. Herod the Great's grand rebuilding of the Temple marked a final golden age before rising tensions with Roman power.
Destruction and Legacy The Great Revolt ended with the Temple's destruction in 70 AD, and the failed Bar Kokhba revolt of 135 AD sealed the loss of Jewish Jerusalem. These events forged the foundations of Judaism, Christianity, and the enduring memory of ancient Israel.
