Founding a Dynasty Born from the collapse of the Qin and the epic Chu-Han contention, the Han Dynasty was established by the commoner-turned-emperor Liu Bang in 202 BC. It would become the model for imperial China, so foundational that the Chinese majority still call themselves the "Han people."
Golden Age and Expansion Under Emperor Wu, the Han surged outward — crushing the Xiongnu, opening the Silk Road through Zhang Qian's westward missions, and founding an Imperial University to staff a Confucian bureaucracy. Trade, ideas, and armies reached across Central Asia, linking China to the wider ancient world.
Restoration and Innovation Wang Mang's brief Xin usurpation split the era into Western and Eastern Han, with Liu Xiu restoring the dynasty from a new capital at Luoyang. This later period saw Cai Lun perfect papermaking and even reported contact with Roman envoys, marking a high point of Han science and diplomacy.
Decline and Fall Court intrigue, corruption, and the massive Yellow Turban Rebellion hollowed out imperial authority. Warlords like Dong Zhuo seized power, the Battle of Red Cliffs fractured the realm, and in 220 AD the last emperor was deposed — ushering in the Three Kingdoms.
