Rebuilding from the Ashes In the wake of two devastating world wars, six nations bound their coal and steel industries together in 1951, wagering that shared economies would make future conflict unthinkable. The 1957 Treaty of Rome widened this vision into a common market and set Europe on the path toward deeper integration.
Widening and Deepening Across the following decades the Community grew outward and inward at once — welcoming new members like the UK, Ireland and Denmark, launching direct parliamentary elections, and dismantling internal borders through the Schengen Agreement. The Single European Act crowned this era with the promise of a true single market.
A Union Is Born The 1992 Maastricht Treaty transformed a trading bloc into the European Union, complete with shared citizenship and the blueprint for a single currency. The euro's arrival in 2002 and the sweeping 2004 enlargement stitched much of the continent, East and West, into a single political and economic community.
Triumphs and Turning Points Reformed by the Treaty of Lisbon and honored with the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize, the EU stood as a landmark experiment in peaceful cooperation — even as Britain's 2020 departure revealed the tensions of union.
