About this poster
A New Rome in the East When Constantine dedicated Constantinople in 330 and the empire split permanently in 395, the Roman world's center of gravity shifted east. This surviving half would outlast its western counterpart by nearly a thousand years, preserving Roman law, Greek learning, and Christian faith.
Age of Justinian and Golden Splendor Under Justinian I, the empire reconquered lost territory, codified Roman law, and raised the incomparable Hagia Sophia. Yet controversies like Iconoclasm and the growing rift with the Latin West revealed deep tensions within the Christian world.
Crisis, Schism, and Crusade The defeat at Manzikert in 1071 exposed Anatolia to the Turks, while the Great Schism of 1054 severed East from West. The betrayal of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 saw fellow Christians sack Constantinople, a wound from which the empire never fully recovered.
Twilight and Fall Though the Palaiologos dynasty restored the capital in 1261, the empire shrank steadily. Desperate appeals for Western aid failed, and in 1453 the walls of Constantinople finally fell to Mehmed II, ending an empire that had bridged antiquity and the Renaissance.
