Discoveries That Rewrote Biology In 1977, Alvin's discovery of hydrothermal vents and their strange ecosystems revealed life thriving without sunlight, reshaping our understanding of biology itself. Ballard's 1985 discovery of the Titanic showed the deep could also be an archive of human history.
The Hadal Frontier Today Robotic vehicles like Kaiko and Nereus, along with daring solo pilots such as James Cameron and Victor Vescovo, have carried exploration into the hadal trenches. The 2023 Titan tragedy reminded the world that the deep ocean remains one of Earth's most unforgiving frontiers.
