This book completely reframed how I think about AI risk. The reflex arc metaphor in Chapter 1 is brilliant—it cuts through all the sci-fi superintelligence talk and shows us what's actually happening in our hospitals and trading floors right now. The anecdote about the Black patient and the biased triage system staying in use because speed "feels like it should outweigh accuracy" hit me hard. Three years of reporting across ICUs, command centers, and trading floors shows. This isn't theoretical hand-wringing; it's urgent documentation of infrastructure we've already handed over without realizing it. Essential reading.

Velocity makes a genuinely important argument about AI becoming embedded in institutional reflexes rather than developing into superintelligence, and the five-domain structure (medicine, finance, defense, surveillance, labor) is solid reporting. My one frustration: the book sometimes feels more like deep diagnosis than prescription. I wanted more on what reversal might actually look like, or whether some of these systems could be redesigned rather than unwound entirely. Still, the opening chapter alone—the case study of hospitals normalizing speed over accuracy—is worth the price of admission.
