About this book

So your doctor just said the words 'familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia' — and now your head is spinning. It's a mouthful. It sounds like a disease. Your body has high calcium, and that word 'hypercalcemia' can send anyone down a dark internet hole. But here's the thing they don't tell you in the clinic: for most people, this condition is not a disease in the way you're thinking. It's a genetic quirk, not a disaster.

This guide is your calm, knowledgeable friend who has read all the research and is here to explain it without the medical talk. You'll learn what FHH actually is (a benign change in how your body's calcium sensor works), why you have it (it's inherited, not earned), and what it means for your daily life (probably, very little). It covers everything from the confusing blood tests to the genetic testing debate, from what to tell your family to how to handle a doctor who's never seen a case before.

With a warm, honest tone and zero jargon without immediate translation, this book walks you through diagnosis, treatment (spoiler: usually there isn't any), and day-to-day living. It also includes dedicated chapters for caregivers and a full list of questions to bring to your next appointment. This is not medical advice — it's genuine understanding, served with a side of humor and a whole lot of reassurance.

I bought this for my sister who just got diagnosed, and honestly, I read it myself first. It's fine. The chapter on what FHH actually is helped me stop picturing a death sentence. But it did feel a bit repetitive by the middle chapters. Still, it's way better than the hospital's one-page printout. I felt like I could breath a little easier after reading it.

After my blood test showed high calcium, my doctor mentioned FHH and I panicked and Googled it at 2am. Bad idea. This book was the first thing that actually made sense. The explanation in chapter one about the calcium 'thermostat' finally made it click for me. I appreciated that it didn't try to force a treatment plan that doesn't exist. It's a solid guide and I feel more prepared for my next appointment.

It's a decent book, and I'm glad I bought it, but I was hoping for a bit more actionable advice on the day-to-day stuff. The first chapter was great and really calmed me down, but the later chapters felt a little lighter. That being said, I have FHH and this is the only resource I've found that talks to me like a person, not a lab result. Worth the money for the peace of mind.

I was diagnosed last month and was a wreck. My doctor did a terrible job explaining it. This book broke down all the scary words. The 'calcium sensor' explanation was something I could finally tell my family. I also used the question list in chapter eight at my follow-up, and the doctor seemed surprised I knew the right things to ask. I feel like I'm back in the driver's seat. Highly recommend to anyone in that scary post-diagnosis fog.

This is a helpful guide, no doubt. It took the edge off a scary diagnosis and answered a lot of questions. I just wish it had gone deeper into the genetic testing part, which is something my doctor brought up. Also, I'm a bit of a hypochondriac, so the 'you probably have no symptoms' line was good to hear, even if I didn't fully believe it. Solid book, minor complaints.

As a caregiver for my wife, this book was a godsend. I didn't know how to support her when she got the news, and this gave me the tools. The chapter for caregivers (chapter seven) was especially helpful — it told me what NOT to say, which was basically everything I was saying. I'm not usually a book guy, but this one got me through a rough week. It's a bit casual in tone, but that's exactly what we needed.

I'm giving this three stars because it's informative but not life-changing. The author's voice is friendly, which I appreciate, and chapter one is worth the price alone — it explains the difference between FHH and other hypercalcemia conditions so simply that I finally understood it. But I wish there was more about the actual lived experience and less about the science. Overall, though, it provided the clarity I wasn't getting from my doctor.
