About this book

So. You've just been told you have an infectious disease. Whether it's a common bacterial infection or something more complex, the moment you hear those words, your brain probably stopped listening. Words like 'bacteria,' 'virus,' 'fungus,' or 'parasite' start swirling, and the doctor's voice fades into a blur of warnings, medications, and follow-up appointments. This guide exists for that exact moment - and for the weeks and months that follow.

This is not a medical textbook. It's a conversation. Written in warm, plain language, it walks you through what an infectious disease actually is (spoiler: it's a germ that has overstayed its welcome), why it happened (often through no fault of your own), and what you'll feel as it runs its course. You'll learn how to talk to your doctors, what questions to ask, and how to sort through treatment options without panic. We don't shy away from the scary parts, but we also refuse to catastrophize.

Because here's the truth: an infectious disease diagnosis is something you live with, not something that defines you. This guide is here to tell you what no one else will - what it's really like, what actually helps, and how to get through it without losing your mind or your sense of humor. It's written by someone who believes you're capable of understanding your own body, and who wants to help you become your own best advocate.

I picked this up two hours after my diagnosis and it was exactly the hand-hold I needed. The first chapter finally made me understand what 'infectious' actually meant in my body - not in a scary way, just in a 'okay, this is what's happening' way. It didn't try to make me feel better about having a disease, but it made me feel less alone and more capable. I've already dog-eared the questions for my doctor, and I'm less terrified about my next appointment. It's not a magic fix, but it's a really good flashlight.

This guide is useful, but it reads a bit like a generic overview even though it's trying to be specific. I came in wanting to understand my specific infection, but the first chapter spends a lot of time explaining what all infectious diseases have in common. That said, the tone is warm and I appreciated that it didn't talk down to me. The chapter on what to ask your doctor was genuinely helpful. It's a good starting point, but I found myself wishing for more depth on the 'why me' part - the book acknowledges the question but doesn't answer it fully. Still, worth a read if you're frozen like I was.
