About this book

So you just got the words "congenital hypothyroidism" — maybe for your baby, maybe for yourself — and now your brain is a scrambled mess of questions and worst-case scenarios. Take a breath. This guide is here to walk you through everything, one step at a time, in language that doesn't require a medical degree to understand.

You'll learn what the thyroid actually does, why it matters that it's underactive from birth, and what your treatment options look like — without the sugar-coating and without the doom. We'll talk about symptoms, tests, doctors' visits, and the honest truth about causes (including when there is no clear cause). You'll get practical advice for daily life, from diet and sleep to travel and work. And if you're a parent or partner of someone with this condition, there's a whole chapter on how to support them without losing yourself in the process.

This is not medical advice — it's understanding. It's the book we wish someone had handed us the day we got the diagnosis. Read it in one sitting or keep it on the nightstand. Either way, you're not alone in this, and you're about to feel a whole lot more capable.

I got this after my daughter's newborn screen flagged her thyroid, and I was a wreck. The first chapter alone calmed me down — it explains what the thyroid actually does without making me feel stupid. I love that it says 'for informational purposes only' because it's honest, but it's also the most useful thing I've read. Didn't give it five stars only because I wanted the chapter on causes to be longer, but honestly, this book got me through the first week. Highly recommend.
