About this book

You walked out of the doctor's office with a new phrase — acquired metabolic disease — and a head full of questions. What does that actually mean? Why did this happen to me? What do I do now? This guide is your answer, written in plain English by someone who knows medicine but leaves the jargon at the door. It explains what is happening in your body, why you might feel the way you do, and what tests and treatments are likely to come next — all while being clear that this book is for information, not medical advice.

You will also find practical help for living with this condition: what to tell your family, how to ask your doctor the right questions, and what to do about fatigue, diet, sleep, work, and relationships. There is a chapter for caregivers, too, because you cannot pour from an empty cup. Written with warmth, honesty, and a little bit of irreverence, this guide holds your hand without breaking it — and never gives you false hope, just clear and compassionate information.

I was diagnosed two weeks ago and felt like I had been dropped into a foreign country where everyone spoke Latin. This book was the first thing that actually made sense. The chapter on what the disease really is answered questions I didn't even know I had, and the list of questions to ask my doctor saved me from just sitting there in shock. I have already bought a copy for my sister so she can understand what is happening to me. It feels like a friend is explaining it all to me, not a textbook.

This is a solid guide and I appreciate that it's written in plain English. The first chapter did a good job of calming me down. That said, I wish there was a little more depth in the treatment chapter — it gives a good overview, but I wanted more specifics on medication options and interactions. It's definitely helpful for the first week after diagnosis, but I found myself wanting the 'next level' book after a month. Still, worth the read, especially for family members who are completely new to all of this.
