About this book

So you like the idea of houseplants. You want greenery in your apartment, fresher air, a hobby that doesn't require a gym membership. But a little voice also whispers: you'll kill it, like you killed that succulent in college. This guide is for that voice. It's a ten-day, ground-level introduction to houseplant care designed for complete beginners who want to try the skill before they commit to it. No overnight mastery talk, no 'anyone can do this' hype. Just a real plan with real tasks you can do today, with whatever you have around the house.

The plan is structured as a ten-day experiment. Each day has a concrete session: feeling soil moisture before watering, figuring out which windows actually get sun, avoiding the classic overwatering trap, and learning to spot a struggling plant before it's a corpse. You won't need to buy a fancy moisture meter or a greenhouse, at least not yet. You'll use your hands, a bit of patience, and a good, close look at the world you're putting your plants in.

By the end of the ten days, you'll have done more than just read about plants. You'll have put your hands in the dirt, you'll have made a smart first purchase, and you'll have a clear idea of whether this is a hobby you want to keep growing. If it is, great. If it isn't, you'll know that too — and you won't have wasted a ton of money or time to find out.

This guide was honest with me. I expected a hype-filled pep talk, but instead I got a day-by-day plan that told me to just touch the dirt and see what happens. The first day's task was so simple I was almost embarrassed, but it actually got me to look at plants in my house I'd been ignoring. It's not going to make you a master botanist in a week and a half, which I appreciated. I bought one pothos following the advice in the later chapters and it's still alive, so I'm calling that a win.
