For me the chapter on choosing parts was the most useful, especially the cost-per-mile breakdown, but it stops short of giving you specific torque tables and exact quantities for things like sealants and greases. For a handbook that advertises installation and maintenance, I feel like those sections are too general to be a real go-to manual. It's a good book, just not comprehensive enough for my shop toolbox.

The selection framework and the discussion on OE vs aftermarket saved me at least a few bad purchases by reading it. But I do wish the authors had included more real-world appendices, like a tire load rating chart or a hardware grade cross-reference. The writing is clear, but it feels like it could be another 100 pages longer without padding. For the price it's decent, but I'll wait for a revised edition before I recommend it to my colleague.

I am a stockist and I found the chapter on business opportunities very strong, and the way it laid out the margin structures and typical failure rates for common parts was something I wish I had read five years ago. The explanatory prose is dense but not dry until you get to the last few sections, which feel a bit rushed. It would have been better to have that same level of detail for the troubleshooting chapter as there was for the buying chapter. That said, it's already become my go-to reference on the job.

The weakness is that sometimes the examples are too broad and I have to apply the logic to my own situation without a hard example, which takes time. I think one more round of editing to add specific alternates for common domestic and import models would push this up to a five-star reference.
