Chapter 1 alone is worth the price - it finally made the difference between gross and PTO horsepower click for me. I would have liked a bit more depth on specific transmission types in the later chapters, but for a general handbook it's excellent.

Solid information, but I was expecting more on the older models that most hobbyists actually end up buying. The book's depth is clearly on modern machines, which is fine if you're dealing with a dealership, but less useful if your budget involves a 1980s diesel and research on eBay. Chapter 1 is genuinely good, and I can't fault the clarity, but I came away wanting a second volume on classic models.

I'm a landscaping business owner and tend to trust my mechanic over manuals, but I bought this to stop making silly specification mistakes. The chapter on choosing the right tractor is particularly useful - it walks you through load types, terrain, and implements in a way that is concrete, not abstract. I docked a star because the business opportunities chapter was a bit light for my taste, but as an owner's reference, it's a very solid pick.

Finally, a reference that treats you like an adult. No hype, no dripping faucets of adjectives, just clear, well-organized information. I've been running a small farm for twenty years, and Chapter 1's explanation of hydraulic flow vs. pressure sorted out a problem I'd been misdiagnosing for years. You can tell it was carefully edited. This is going to be my standard recommendation for anyone in the market.

It's informative, but I'm not sure it's as deep as it could be. The maintenance and troubleshooting chapter is a good overview, but if you're already experienced with diesel engines, you might find yourself skipping sections. Chapter 1 is a good orientation, though nothing here is a game-changer. Worth buying if you are a newer owner looking for a single, structured reference rather than a forum.

Bought this on a whim when I was upgrading from a garden tractor to a sub-compact for my five acres. This book is not a glossy brochure, that's for sure - which is exactly what I appreciated. The chapter on installation and setup was spot on, especially the section on dealer pre-delivery inspections. My only gripe is the book doesn't include a pull out quick-reference card for fluid capacities, but the text itself is spotty on those exact numbers anyway. Recommended.
