The Complete Handbook of Specimen Cups

I'm a lab manager and I was hoping this would save me some real grief with a recurring leak issue we have with a budget supplier. It's a well-organized, thorough book, and the chapter on troubleshooting was useful enough for me to adjust our storage protocol. I just felt the section on choosing between sterile and non-sterile could have been a bit more decisive. It kind of dances around the subject. It's a good reference, though, and I don't regret the purchase.

I wish I'd had this twenty years ago. A lot of what it teaches is what a meticulous lab director tells you in passing, but here it's all structured, written down, and with actual rationales behind it. The material science breakdown in the first chapter made everything else click when we were having issues with sample degradation. This isn't a flashy book, it's a legit field manual that should be in every supply closet. I've already ordered a copy for our hospital's off-site clinic.

As a supplier sales rep, I've got decent product knowledge, but this filled in the gaps on the 'why' and 'where' a lot better than most of my factory training. The commercial chapter on business opportunities feels a bit basic for anyone who's been in the industry for more than a year, but parts of the selection chapter were genuinely helpful for consulting with clients. A bit dry, but for a reference book, that's a plus.

I bought this with a moderate amount of skepticism because it just seems like such a basic item. That skepticism was wrong. This book is a genuine deep dive into why these simple things fail and how to prevent that. We use these for environmental soil samples, and the correct use of temperature and the specific marking accuracy stuff saved us from a rejected batch. It’s dry, but it’s supposed to be. This is a fantastic professional resource.

I'd give it four and a half if I could. The information is spot on and very detailed. I do feel the glossary is a little short, and a few times I found myself looking for a term that wasn't included. But the core chapters are excellent. The chapter on selection alone is worth the price, as it walks you through a logic tree that covers compatibility and pricing. A strong handbook for any serious buyer.
