A sink is a functional fixture designed to hold water and route waste to a drainage system. It consists of a basin (the bowl where water collects), a drain opening, and a connection to the plumbing that carries water away. But this simple description masks the engineering that makes a sink work reliably—and the countless ways poor design, wrong material choice, or bad installation can cause it to fail.
In practice, a sink is the point of interaction between a user and a plumbing system. When you turn on a faucet, water fills the basin. When you pull a stopper or open a drain, water and waste flow down and out through pipes below. That journey seems straightforward, but the path involves careful design: the shape of the basin controls how water drains; the diameter and pitch of pipes determine whether water flows or backs up; the connection between sink and plumbing must be airtight yet removable; and the material chosen must survive repeated contact with hot water, soap, food, and chemicals without corroding, staining, or breaking down structurally.
Why does this matter? Because a sink that seems cheap and simple at purchase often becomes expensive and complicated when installed. A stainless steel sink with a thin gauge rusts through in five years. A ceramic sink installed without proper support cracks under normal use. A drain configured wrong creates slow drainage that no amount of plunging fixes, because the real problem is air venting, not the
