About this book

A flawless finish is the hallmark of professional work, and the quiet, unassuming sanding block is its primary instrument. Yet, it's often the most misused and misunderstood tool in the shop. This handbook strips away the guesswork, teaching you to treat your sanding block not as a simple abrasive holder, but as a precision instrument for achieving flatness and a consistent scratch pattern. From the physics of abrasive cutting to the correct way to sharpen a urethane block, this book is a deep dive into every facet of the tool.

The book begins by dissecting what a sanding block actually is and why the material it's made from matters more than you think. It then guides you through the bewildering array of types, from simple cork to precision-machined aluminum, and provides a clear framework for choosing the correct block for any given task, whether you are leveling veneer or sanding between coats of lacquer. It does not stop at purchase; you will learn the professional techniques for use, the secrets of proper cleaning and maintenance, and how to diagnose and fix problems like glazing and dishing.

Beyond individual technique, this handbook opens a window onto the broader industry. It analyzes the major brands, explains how to spot quality, and details concrete business opportunities, from building a sanding block rental service for local contractors to developing your own private-label brand. Forward-looking and deeply practical, it includes a chapter on future trends in materials and technology and a curated glossary of terms. This is the only book you'll ever need, not just to sand, but to sand with intent and understanding.

As a diy-er, I found this book informative, but it's clearly aimed at a pro. I was looking for a quick section on choosing a sanding block for my home projects, and while I found it, some parts of the early chapters read like a textbook. I'm glad I read it, but the first 50 pages were a bit slower than I needed. The maintenance chapter is solid, and I actually saved a block I was about to throw away.

This is a proper reference book, and it's thorough. I run a small cabinet shop, and the chapter on business opportunities felt a little light for me, but the core information is spot on. I have bought a lot of fancy sanding blocks over the years, and this book does a great job explaining why my old cork blocks still work best for certain things. It was a bit academic, but I'll keep it in the office for my guys.

It's exactly what I needed, a complete guide. I was using the cheapest blocks I could find and always had problems with finish. The book explained the science of why a flex block is better than a hard block for certain curves and how to maintain the flat surface on my longer blocks. It has genuinely improved my car finishing work. It’s a standard reference I keep on my bench now.
