Postage stamps are produced artifacts. They have specifications: a face value (denomination), a size measured in millimeters, a weight in grams, a perforated or imperforate edge, a specific paper composition, possibly a watermark embedded during manufacture, and an issuing authority (typically a postal service or national government). They are made through deliberate, repeatable industrial processes—photogravure, lithography, or modern digital printing—to precise standards. A stamp issued by the United States Postal Service in 1985 has the same measurable properties as one issued today: a defined dimension, a catalogued price, a printing quantity (usually known or estimable), and a documented design. This is not romantic or accidental. It is how stamps work.

Understanding stamps begins with understanding their function and how that function shapes their physical reality. A postage stamp is a receipt. When you affix a stamp to a piece of mail, you are asserting that you have paid the postal authority for the right to have that mail transported and delivered. The stamp proves payment. The postal worker who sorts mail recognizes the stamp's denomination (the number printed on its face, usually with a currency symbol: 42 cents, 1 pound, 100 yen) and verifies that the correct amount has been paid for the weight and destination of the package.
