The Complete Handbook of Pipettes

I've been in lab management for over a decade and thought I knew everything there was to know about pipettes. This book proved me wrong. The chapter on the physics of air displacement alone was worth the price, and the troubleshooting section for sticky plungers solved a recurring issue with my older models that the manufacturer's guide couldn't. It's the first reference I've seen that treats the reader like a professional and not a marketer.

It's a fine reference, and I like the depth on calibration, which is a subject often glossed over. I'm giving it three stars because I felt the sections on brands and suppliers read too much like a catalog, even if it wasn't promoting anyone. I would have preferred more hard data on price-to-performance benchmarks rather than just descriptions of market position. Still, solid for a beginner in a lab.

I'm a solo technician doing repairs for small labs, and this handbook has become my field manual. The detailed explanation of different seal materials and how they interact with solvents is something I've had to learn through trial and error, and seeing it codified here is a huge time-saver. The business chapter on pricing a repair service against the cost of a new unit was also spot on. Highly recommended for other techs.

It's a bit dry, and even the author admits having an authoritative tone, but the information is genuinely practical and useful.

The chapter on tips and compatibility was crucial; it saved me from making a costly mistake of buying generic tips that didn't fit our specific models. The solid, no-nonsense tone is refreshing, though some chapters could be a bit more visual.

I bought this because I run a small hobbyist lab and felt out of my depth with professional equipment. The book did teach me a lot, especially about how to maintain my equipment. However, I felt a lot of the content geared toward the 'business opportunities' and large-scale lab infrastructure was irrelevant to my situation. It's still a useful read, but I hope future editions can clearly delineate sections for a solo user versus a large enterprise buyer.

The book is comprehensive and well-written, but it makes the assumption that everyone has the budget for top-tier brands. The chapter on 'Choosing the Right Pipette' spends a lot of time on high-end features I would never use, and only briefly mentions budget alternatives. I found the troubleshooting chapter helpful, though. It's a good book, but I would have liked more consideration for lower-budget setups.
