About this book

Pet collars and harnesses are simple-looking products with complex engineering requirements. A harness that fits a deep-chested dog poorly can restrict shoulder movement. A collar using the wrong buckle grade can fail during a sudden lunge. This handbook strips away the marketing to focus on the hard facts: webbing grain weights, load-rated hardware, biomechanics of pressure distribution, and the consensus fit standards used by professional trainers and veterinarians.

Written for professionals and serious enthusiasts, the book covers the full lifecycle. It starts with the fundamentals of design and material science, then moves through a structured selection process that pairs animal morphology with product geometry. Subsequent chapters detail safe installation protocols, daily usage practices, and a troubleshooting guide for common failure modes like frayed stitching or corroded snaps. For those building a business, there is a frank look at the supply chain, wholesale pricing structures, and the realities of private-label manufacturing.

This is not a collection of 'best of' listicles. It is a reference work built on practical observation and engineering principles, designed to answer the questions that arise on the job, in the store, or during a product development meeting. Every claim is grounded in specific, usable detail that a professional can act upon immediately.

I bought this for my retail store and it's already paid for itself. The chapter on choosing a harness got me to actually measure chest-to-neck ratios on the dogs coming in, and I've already had a couple of customers come back to thank me for a better fit. My gripe is the binding quality is a bit flimsy for what I'd expect from a reference book, particularly for the price. The content is solid, but the physical book doesn't feel like it'll survive heavy shop use. That said, I'm referencing it almost daily.
