About this book

Office application software is not a commodity, but it is often purchased as one. A five-minute comparison of feature lists will not tell you whether a suite will handle your macro library, open your legacy documents cleanly, or comply with your organization's data-retention policy. This handbook gives you the structured knowledge to make those calls confidently - whether you are outfitting a fifteen-person law firm, migrating a non-profit to open-source tools, or negotiating a volume license for a large enterprise.

The book covers the full lifecycle of office software in a neutral, practical tone. It starts with a clear explanation of what these programs actually do under the hood - document models, file formats, and the ecology of add-ons and extensions. It then moves through concrete evaluation criteria (performance, compatibility, scripting, licensing), installation and configuration procedures, and routine maintenance like update management and template curation. A dedicated troubleshooting section addresses the most common real-world failures, from corrupted styles to broken Excel interop, with step-by-step diagnostic logic.

The final section looks beyond the individual purchase. It profiles the major vendors and their market position, and it lays out realistic business opportunities - reselling, consulting, custom template development, data migration services, and training. It closes with a roadmap of industry trends and a curated list of expert resources: standards bodies, certification programs, and trade publications. Chapter content is grounded in examples that reflect standard office practice, making this a reference you will return to for years.

I bought this because I'm migrating our 30-person accounting office from an old MS Office install to something more current, and I was drowning in vendor pages. The chapter on choosing was genuinely useful - the compatibility testing section alone saved me from a really bad decision regarding legacy Excel files. The troubleshooting part is a bit light on print-specific issues, which is why it's not 5 stars, but the licensing guidance and the maintenance routines are solid. I've already recommended it to our IT guy.
