The microscope is a system, not a collection of independent parts. Most users understand the role of the objective lens in magnifying the specimen, and many have a working grasp of the condenser and illuminator. The eyepiece, however, is frequently treated as little more than a convenient viewing tube for the eye. This is a mistake. The eyepiece is a fully functional lens system that corrects aberrations, defines your field of view, and sets the final magnification of the entire instrument. A poor eyepiece can make a superb objective look mediocre. An incorrectly chosen adapter can turn a flawless optical image into a substandard digital file. What an Eyepiece Actually Does
The eyepiece is not merely a magnifying glass. It is two-stage device. Your objective lens forms a real, magnified image of the specimen inside the microscope body tube. This is known as the intermediate image. The eyepiece takes this intermediate image and projects it to your eye so that it appears to be at a comfortable viewing distance in front of you. This apparent image is what you see when you look through the microscope.
