About this book

The medical alarm industry is a critical safety net, but choosing, installing, and servicing these systems is more complex than a simple retail purchase. The Complete Handbook of Medical Alarm Systems strips away the marketing to give you a practical, technical, and commercial understanding of the technology. Whether you are outfitting a residential care home, managing a large assisted living campus, or looking to create a new revenue stream as an independent technician, this book is your essential field guide.

Dive into the mechanics of pendant transmitters, base station logic, and radio signal propagation. Compare system types from basic landline PERS to sophisticated cellular and Wi-Fi dependent nurse call systems. We provide clear checklists for evaluating specifications like battery life, transmission range, and supervisory signals, so you can make defensible decisions based on data, not just vendor claims. Chapters on installation and troubleshooting walk you through real-world scenarios, including walk-testing procedures, interference issues, and firmware updates.

The second half of the book examines the market from a business perspective. Analyze the positioning of major brands and identify gaps you can fill with a service-based or rental model. We cover the liabilities, insurance, and training requirements needed to operate professionally in this field. With a detailed FAQ and a glossary of industry terms, this is a resource you will return to again and again as the technology evolves.

It's a solid, meaty reference. I picked it up because we're expanding our independent living wing and needed to spec a new system. The sections on RF propagation and the specific breakdown of the different system types (landline vs cellular) were really helpful in our vendor conversations. My reason for not giving it five stars is that, for a handbook, I found the troubleshooting chapter a bit too generic. It lists the common faults but doesn't always get into the exact board-level or firmware quirks, which is what I was hoping for. Still, a worthwhile desk book.

I'm a volunteer coordinator for a small non-profit and felt totally lost when we got a grant to update our old alarm pendants. This book was a bit technical for me at first, I'll admit. The glossary in the back became my best friend. Chapter 4 on Installation was a little over my head, but the chapter on Choosing the Right System was written so clearly that I finally understood what the sales reps were talking about. If you're a professional, you'll probably love it. For a serious hobbyist like me, it was a lot of work, but I got what I needed from it. Good, honest info, just not an easy read cover to cover.
