A makeup sponge is a deformable, porous block of polymer foam used to apply, blend, or remove cosmetic products on the skin. It is a precision instrument in the same way a paintbrush or a palette knife is a precision instrument: the hand is the source of motion and pressure, but the tool is the final interface between the product's physical properties and the surface it is being applied to. Unlike a brush, which uses bristles to deposit and drag product, a sponge uses a continuous network of open cells that absorb liquid, then release it under pressure. This core mechanical difference is the reason a sponge produces a different finish than a brush, and why professionals carry both.

To understand why the sponge behaves the way it does, you have to look at the material. Almost all modern makeup sponges are made from a class of materials called polyurethane. The chemistry is not a sales point; it is a physical reality. Polyurethane is polymerized from liquid precursors into a solid foam with a specific density and a specific cell structure. The foam you see is not a solid block with holes drilled into it. It is a matrix of thin polymer struts and membranes that form microscopic bubbles.
