A hospital gown is a protective barrier garment worn during clinical procedures, patient care, and medical examinations. It serves two primary functions: to protect the patient's dignity and body exposure, and to provide a controlled, cleanable surface between the patient's skin and medical personnel or environmental contaminants.
Unlike a standard patient or examination gown, which prioritizes comfort and ease of access, hospital gowns used in surgical environments and high-risk procedures are engineered textiles with specific barrier properties. They are designed to resist penetration by blood, bodily fluids, and microorganisms under defined conditions of use. This distinction matters. A gown that fails to meet its specified barrier performance can compromise infection control, increase cross-contamination risk, and create liability for the facility that procured it.
The Clinical Context
In daily clinical operations, hospital gowns accomplish several concrete tasks. In an operating room during a surgical procedure, a gown worn by the surgical team must prevent blood and other patient fluids from reaching the wearer's clothing, which in turn would contact other patients later in the day. In a patient care unit, isolation gowns protect both the caregiver from patient pathogens and the patient from environmental contamination. In an emergency department, a full-coverage patient gown may be the only cleanable surface available during initial assessment and stabilization, reducing the accumulation of contaminants on the patient's own clothing.
The gown is not a standalone product. It functions as part of a broader system of personal protective equipment (PPE) and
