The Complete Handbook of Golf

Finally, a golf book that doesn't assume I already know everything or try to sell me something. As someone new to operating a 9-hole course, I found the first chapter crystal clear about what the rules actually require and what the equipment is for. My only quibble is Chapter 6 could use more detail on rental operations specifically, but overall this is exactly what I needed.

This is the handbook I've been looking for. I've been playing seriously for five years and also work in course maintenance, and I'm constantly running into claims I can't verify. Chapter 1 alone—just the plain-English explanation of why clubs and balls are regulated the way they are, and what that means in practice—should be required reading. The whole book is written like someone actually knows what they're talking about. Highly recommended.

Good reference material overall, though I'll admit some chapters feel a bit heavy on technical specs and light on context for why those specs matter in real play. Chapter 1 is strong and sets up the book well, but once you get into the equipment chapters, it feels more like a spec sheet than a guide. Still useful if you're looking for straightforward information rather than marketing hype.

Chapter 1 also did a nice job explaining the equipment rules to me—I didn't realize how specific the regulations were. One small thing: more sample pricing would've been helpful, but that would probably date quickly anyway.

As a course superintendent looking for a reliable reference on equipment standards and maintenance, this book is helpful but not as comprehensive as I hoped. Chapter 1 is well-written and clear, which sets a good tone, but the maintenance chapter could be much deeper. I'd recommend it for someone getting started, but experienced operators might find it light on the technical depth they need for their own operations.
