This handbook is the first one that actually explains the dead time problem and how to correct for it in practical terms, rather than just mentioning it exists. The chapter on choosing the right counter made me realize I had been using the wrong tube type for my surveying work. I dock a star only because the troubleshooting section could be more detailed on some of the newer digital models, but overall this is a solid reference.

The book is thorough, but I was a bit disappointed that a 'complete handbook' doesn't cover the assembly and repair of specific popular models in more depth. The chapter on calibration is good and explains the concept well, but it stops short of giving a complete step-by-step procedure for adjusting the threshold on the more common circuits. If you just need to buy and operate a counter, this is great. If you want to do deeper electronic repair, you'll need additional schematics.
