About this book

Exercise equipment mats are simple in appearance but complex in engineering. A 300-pound treadmill, a dropping dumbbell, or a rubber tire sled each imposes different demands on the mat beneath them. This handbook dissects those demands and explains exactly what materials, thicknesses, densities, and surface treatments will and will not survive them.

Written for professionals and serious users, this book is not a catalog of products. It is a systematic reference covering the chemistry of rubber and PVC, the mechanics of impact absorption, the specifics of subfloor protection, and the installation techniques that prevent mat creep, curling, and moisture entrapment. It also provides a full maintenance and troubleshooting section, a survey of brands and supplier tiers, and a realistic assessment of business models from reselling to private labeling.

Every chapter is grounded in concrete examples: how a mat behaves on concrete versus plywood, why a 3/8-inch mat fails under a leg press, what an EPDM blend offers that a recycled rubber mat does not, and how to calculate whether a mat is cost-effective for a commercial floor. The book closes with an FAQ and a glossary of terms, making it a permanent desk reference for anyone who buys, sells, or installs this product.

★★★★

This is the most specific book on floor mats I've ever seen, which is both its strength and its limitation. The chapter on materials science actually helped me understand why my old rubber mats degraded, and the maintenance section fixed our curling issue at the gym. I just wish there were more photos of real installations, especially interlocking tiles on uneven concrete. For the technical content alone, though, it earned a permanent spot on my shelf.
