About this book

The dart flight is the most replaced, most experimented-with, and least understood component of a dart setup. Most players choose flights based on habit or a pro's endorsement, leading to inconsistent throws and wasted money. This handbook changes that. It provides a clear, engineering-based breakdown of materials (polyester, nylon, and polymer blends), shape dynamics, and manufacturing precision, giving you the tools to predict flight behavior, not just react to it. Inside, you'll find practical guidance on pairing flights with specific barrels and stems, adjusting for different throwing styles, and correcting common flight-related defects like fishtailing and stalling.

It's a thorough book, no doubt, and I learned a lot about materials I didn't know were that deep. That said, it gets a bit bogged down in the physics and the sheer volume of shapes. I'm a decent pub player, not an engineer. I skimmed a lot of the first chapter to get to the practical 'choose the right one' part, which was actually helpful. If you're really, really into the tech specs, this is for you. For a casual but serious player, it's a bit of a heavy read, but a good reference to have on the shelf.

I bought this for my shop's back office to help staff answer customer questions. The troubleshooting and business opportunity chapters are solid and gave me some new ideas for displays. My main complaint is the tone; it's so dry. It reads like a textbook, which is fine, but I was hoping for a bit more of the 'real world' feel you get from the better online forums. It's a good resource, but I don't think it's the 'complete handbook' a beginner or average player would need. It's more for the pros and the nerds.

Finally, someone wrote the manual that the industry needed. The first chapter alone, about the physics and why that little bit of turbulence matters, helped me understand why my current setup was 'fishtailing' on hard throws. The book gave me a systematic way to test new shapes instead of my usual 'buy a bunch and see what sticks' method. I found a few minor typos in the later chapters, but the content is dead-on. I've already recommended it to my darts team. Worth the price just for the material comparison charts alone.

I appreciated that the book didn't try to sell me on the newest, most expensive flight. It just gave the facts and let me make my own choice. The section on using different flights for soft-tip vs. steel-tip was practically worth the whole book since I play both. The writing is a bit dense in places, and I wish it had more high-quality photos showing the things it's talking about, like stability issues. It's a good reference though. I'll keep it for my dart cabinet for when I need to double-check a spec.

This is a comprehensive look at a subject that is usually glossed over. The book focuses on the 'why' behind the shape and material, which is a lot more useful than just seeing a picture of a shape in a catalog. It can be a bit technical and the price of the paperback feels a little high for a book on such a small item. The business chapter, however, was a great idea and makes it a worthwhile investment for anyone doing more than just playing at home. It's a solid 3-star read: very informative, but not super exciting.

This is the definitive guide. Period. As a tournament organizer, I thought I knew all there was to know about flights, but the chapters on rule compliance and the breakdown of different material consistencies were immediately useful. The troubleshooting guide is worth its weight in goldβ€”I fixed a dart stalling problem that has plagued me for years after one read. The business analysis section is smart and forward-thinking, providing a clear path for anyone looking to take their hobby to a commercial level. It's dense, but every sentence is packed with practical, applicable expertise. Essential reading for anyone who takes darts seriously.
