About this book

Whether you are repowering a 52-foot sportfisher, equipping a fleet of rental pontoon boats, or retrofitting a residential dock in a brackish-water marina, the ladder is the most used, most abused, and least understood piece of boarding equipment on any vessel. This handbook strips away the marketing gloss and provides a clear-eyed engineering and maintenance reference written for working professionals and knowledgeable owners.

The book breaks down the real differences in materials (5086 vs. 6061-T6 aluminum, 304 vs. 316L stainless, plastic vs. wood), explains load-testing methodology and safety standards, and offers decision trees for selecting a style from a simple two-step transom ladder to a heavy-duty davit-launched platform. Dedicated chapters cover proper backing-plate installation, the biology of galvanic corrosion and how to design around it, plus the maintenance and troubleshooting procedures that keep latches, springs, and struts operating for decades. A final section looks at the commercial side of the industry, outlining opportunities in fabrication, rental, servicing, and bespoke manufacturing.

The information is practical and immediately applicable. It includes material compatibility tables, torque specifications for common fasteners, inspection checklists, and case-based examples like a catamaran charter operator's retrofit of a side-mount swim platform. It is a manual to be used, not just read, and it will sit on the workbench of professionals who take boarding safety seriously.

★★★★

I'm a marina manager and I bought this to have a solid reference on hand instead of wading through manufacturer PDFs all day. It's genuinely thorough on the engineering side, and the corrosion and backing-plate sections alone are worth the price. I only took off a star because I'd have liked more depth on the hydraulic and electric actuation systems, which feel a bit glossed over given how common they're becoming. Still, an asset for the office bookshelf.
