Finally a cable book that treats this seriously. I've been running AV installations for eight years and this fills gaps I didn't know I had—especially the sections on impedance matching and why some cables fail intermittently in certain environments. The Chapter 1 explanation of how signal actually travels through a conductor is the clearest I've seen. One small frustration: I wish there were more troubleshooting flowcharts, but the glossary and FAQ make up for it. Highly useful.

Solid technical reference, and I appreciate that it's not trying to sell me brand-name cables or overpriced boutique gear. The physics is clearly explained. That said, Chapter 1 assumes more baseline knowledge about electrical systems than some readers will have—I had to look up a few terms before I really understood the impedance section. Still worthwhile, but beginners might want to pair this with a supplementary resource.

The book is thorough and avoids the marketing nonsense you find everywhere else, which is refreshing. I learned a lot about shielding and grounding. But I was hoping for more practical guidance on evaluating cable lifespan and budgeting for replacements in commercial environments. The installation chapter is good but feels a bit surface-level compared to how deep Chapter 1 goes into the underlying theory.

This is the book I should have read five years ago. I've lost count of how many intermittent video signal problems I've diagnosed the hard way that Chapter 5 would have helped me understand immediately. The explanation of signal integrity in Chapter 1 alone justifies buying this. Clear, honest, no marketing fluff. Everyone in my department is getting a copy.
