About this book

Most aquarium decor advice is a mix of marketing claims and conflicting forum opinions. The Complete Handbook of Aquarium Decor cuts through that noise. This is a practical, technical reference for anyone who makes a living from aquariums or takes them very seriously: maintenance technicians, aquascapers, store buyers, and advanced hobbyists. It treats decor as a critical component of water chemistry and animal welfare, not just a visual layer. You will learn how to evaluate materials like lava rock, driftwood, and ceramic media based on their real-world properties: porosity, leaching behavior, structural integrity, and long-term stability.

The core of the book is a logical workflow. It starts with an in-depth analysis of what decor is and why it matters, then moves into a detailed breakdown of types and specifications. You will learn how to choose the right piece for a specific system, how to install it safely to prevent injury to fish and damage to glass, and how to establish a maintenance routine that prevents algae, toxic gas pockets, and structural degradation. The later chapters cover the business side: average costs, supplier positioning, and concrete opportunities in servicing, installation, and consulting.

The book avoids generic advice and vague aesthetics. Every chapter points to real materials, specific procedures, and common failure modes. Whether you are setting up a 10-gallon nano tank or a 500-gallon public display, the principles here apply. This is not a book you read once and shelve; it is a reference you will keep near the tank or in the service vehicle.

This is a solid reference. I run a maintenance business and I've already used the chapter on material specs to replace a few client tanks where the previous decor was driving the pH up. The chapter on installation is thorough, though I wish it had a few more diagrams for some of the more complex hardscape arrangements. It's a bit dry in places, but it's a handbook, not a coffee table book. I'll keep this in the van for sure.

I'm a hobbyist with a 75-gallon community tank, and I found the sections on wood and rock selection really useful. I had a piece of mopani driftwood that was leaching tannins like crazy, and this book explained the difference between tannins and other leachates, plus the proper way to soak and prep it. It doesn't have the pretty pictures you'd get from an aquascaping book, but the information is much more valuable. It made me realize a few things I was doing wrong.

Got this after seeing our local fish store guy using a copy to check something for a customer. I am a beginner-intermediate and found the first half great. The chapter on understanding why certain rocks are bad is something I haven't seen explained so clearly anywhere else. I dropped a star because I found the business chapter sort of irrelevant to me, but I can see why it's there. It's a straight-ahead reference book, which is what I wanted. No fluff.

Finally, a book that treats aquascaping like engineering instead of art. I've been doing this for 15 years and learned a lot about the actual chemical interaction between different types of lava rock and soft water. It confirmed some suspicions I had about a 'safe' resin ornament that was actually reacting. The troubleshooting section is gold, especially the part about anaerobic pockets in deep substrate paired with heavy hardscape. I've already recommended this to three colleagues. This is a legitimate field manual.
