Chapter 1: Understanding Air Purifier Filters
An air purifier filter is a mechanical device designed to remove particles, gases, or both from an air stream by forcing air through a barrier material and trapping contaminants inside it. Unlike an air purifier (a complete appliance that uses a filter and fan), a filter itself is the consumable media and frame that sits inside an HVAC system, portable air cleaner, or dedicated filtration unit. Its job is narrow and specific: stop particles from passing through, and do so for long enough that the filter can be changed before it becomes so clogged that airflow drops to unacceptable levels or air bypasses the filter entirely.
This is an engineering tradeoff, not a magic solution. A filter captures particles by forcing air molecules—and the particles they carry—through a maze of fibers, honeycombs, or electrostatic media. Some particles hit fibers and stick; others are attracted electrostatically; still others are simply too large to fit through the gaps. The more efficiently a filter captures particles, the more resistance it creates to airflow. Run a filter long enough and it loads with dust, which increases airflow resistance further. Eventually you must replace it or clean it (if the design permits cleaning). The question professionals and serious users face is not whether a filter works—they all work to some degree—but rather: which filter solves your specific problem at an acceptable cost, with a sustainable replacement interval, without starving your system of air.
