About this book

You've seen the photos: perfect smoke rings, glistening ribs, friends gathered around a backyard smoker. But what does it actually take to get there? This guide walks you through grilling and BBQ from zero — no assumed knowledge, no expensive shopping list, no promises that you'll win a trophy in week one.

You'll get a breakdown of what gear you really need (and what you can skip), what it costs to start at a comfortable level, and what a typical session actually feels like — the prep, the patience, the occasional frustration, and the deep satisfaction of serving food you cooked with fire. With a self-assessment checklist and a day-by-day first-week plan, you can decide if this hobby is worth your Saturday afternoons before you invest a single dollar.

★★★★★

I liked that this book actually gave me numbers instead of vague advice like 'buy a good grill.' The chapter on starter gear and costs was really helpful for setting a budget. I docked a star because I felt like some sections could have been a little tighter — the chapter about what a typical session looks like rambled a bit for my taste. Overall, though, it convinced me to start with a simple charcoal kettle instead of dropping a bunch of money on a pellet smoker, and that alone was worth the price.
