Chapter 1: What Does a Neurodiagnostic Technologist Actually Do?
Let's strip away the title for a moment. "Neurodiagnostic Technologist" sounds like someone who belongs in a research lab wearing a white coat and holding a clipboard. The reality is grittier, more immediate, and much more patient-facing. You are the person who records the electrical activity of the nervous system to help doctors figure out what's wrong. You are part equipment technician, part patient caregiver, and part data analyst.
Your primary tool is the electroencephalograph, or EEG machine, which you'll get to know intimately. To perform an EEG, you place a series of small metal discs, called electrodes, on the patient's scalp using a special conductive paste or glue. These electrodes detect the tiny electrical signals that the brain produces naturally. These signals are amplified thousands of times and displayed as wavy lines on a computer screen. That screen output is the brain's electrical fingerprint, and the neurologist will use it to diagnose conditions like epilepsy, stroke, brain tumors, sleep disorders, and even to determine if a patient is brain-dead. Your whole job is to ensure that fingerprint is clear, complete, and free from interference.
The classic EEG is called a routine EEG. A patient comes to the neurodiagnostic lab, usually in a hospital or a clinic, and you walk them through the process.
