Bouguer shivering on that volcano, trying to weigh the Earth with a pocket-watch instrument—it reads like an adventure novel, except every wild claim is true. The way the author weaves together the Andes expeditions, Cavendish's lead balls, and modern atomic clocks is nothing short of brilliant. If you've ever wondered why we obsess over numbers, this book will not only answer that but make you feel the obsession yourself. Easily the best science history I've read in years.

The opening with Bouguer in the Andes is vivid and promising. But about halfway through, the narrative started to feel repetitive: another scientist, another instrument, another near-disaster. I also wished the author had spent more time on the philosophical question of why precision matters to us, since the back cover promised that depth. It's a solid read for hardcore science buffs, but I found my attention drifting during the Victorian coal mine chapters.
