About this book

You've set the goals, downloaded the apps, and promised yourself 'this time will be different.' Yet, despite your best intentions, you still find yourself doom-scrolling when you wanted to write, ordering takeout when you planned to cook, and skipping the gym for the fourth day in a row. The problem isn't you; the problem is your strategy. You are trying to win a battle of willpower in a system designed to make you lose.

Design Your Default is not another motivational pep talk. It is a field manual for the modern world, showing you how to work with your brain's wiring, not against it. Drawing on the latest insights from behavioral economics and cognitive psychology, this book introduces the Default Loop - a simple, four-step framework to guide you through any decision. You’ll learn how to identify your 'Default Moments,' the high-stakes choices that shape your day, and create an environment where the right choice is not the hardest one, but the most obvious one.

This book provides a clear, 7-day action plan to build immediate traction, advanced strategies for when you plateau, and an honest look at the tools that actually help (and the ones that don't). It’s a complete system for high performers who are ready to stop spending energy on decision-making and start investing it in what truly matters. Your future self is built by your current defaults. Learn how to design them.

This is a solid, practical book. After I finished, I immediately did the 'Default Audit' from chapter 1, and it was honestly a little embarrassing how obvious my problem areas were. The 7-day plan in chapter 3 was easy to stick to, and the 'One-Move Rule' for my home office has been a game-changer. I replaced a whole shelf full of productivity books with this one system. I took off one star because some of the advanced strategies in chapter 8 feel like they're designed for a level of intensity I'm not sure I can maintain, but the core framework is pure gold.

The book's promise is that it's not like other self-help guides, and in some ways, it isn't. I found the 'Default Loop' framework in chapter 2 useful, particularly the 'Audit' step. It helped me pinpoint exactly where my evenings fall apart. However, I felt the chapters on 'Mindset' (chapter 6) and 'Tools' (chapter 7) rehashed advice I've seen before in blog posts. It's a more structured system than most, and I have gotten value from it, especially the section on routine maintenance, but I wouldn't call it a complete revolution. Good, solid, and occasionally excellent, but not groundbreaking.

The title is apt, but the subtitle could be 'How to finally stop sabotaging yourself.' The first chapter hit me like a truck when it pointed out that I was fighting my environment with willpower instead of just changing the environment. The 7-day start plan was the first time I've actually stuck with anything for more than a week. It’s worth the price for the section in chapter 5 on the 'Willpower Overestimate' alone. I now have my home office set up so the good choice is the path of least resistance, and my writing output has more than doubled in a month. I've already bought a copy for my team.
