Salmonellosis (say: sal-moh-nell-OH-sis) is the technical term for an infection caused by a group of bacteria called Salmonella. Yes, the same family name as the fish, but please do not worry about eating salmon. It has nothing to do with fish. The bacteria are named after a guy named Daniel Salmon, who discovered them over a hundred years ago. Salmonella is a microscopic, single-celled organism. It has a tail, and it uses that tail to swim around in your gut like it owns the place. It doesn't. But that won't stop it from trying.
