Let's start with the simplest version: Pierson syndrome is a rare genetic condition that primarily affects two parts of the body — the kidneys and the eyes. It's named after the doctor who first described it back in 1963, but the name doesn't tell you much. What you need to know is what's happening inside, and why it matters for you or your loved one.

What's going on in the body?

To understand Pierson syndrome, you have to meet a tiny but incredibly important piece of your body's plumbing: the glomerulus (say: glow-MERR-yoo-lus). That's the filtering unit inside your kidney. If the kidney is a coffee maker, the glomerulus is the filter that holds back
