What Is NESCAV syndrome, Really?
First, take a breath. You’ve just been handed a name for something that may have been scaring you for a long time — or something that arrived out of nowhere, like a glass of cold water thrown in your face. NESCAV syndrome is a rare genetic condition that affects how your body’s cells manage energy and repair themselves. That might still sound like jargon, so let’s unpack it slowly.
Every cell in your body is like a tiny factory. It takes in fuel (from the food you eat), burns it to make energy, and then uses that energy to do its job — whether its job is to help your heart beat, your brain think, or your muscles move. It also has to clean up its own waste and fix any damage that happens. NESCAV syndrome comes from a spelling mistake in a specific gene — a gene called NECAP1 — that acts like a supervisor in the factory. When that supervisor doesn’t work properly, your cells struggle to keep up with normal maintenance. Over time, this can cause problems in the parts of your body that use the most
