Okay. Breathe. You've just been told you have midface dysplasia, and you're probably sitting somewhere - maybe in a car, maybe at a kitchen table, maybe in a hospital corridor - thinking one of two things: "What the hell is that?" or "Is this going to ruin my life?" This chapter is here to answer the first question honestly, and to help you approach the second with a lot less fear.
Let's start with the words themselves. "Midface" is exactly what it sounds like: the middle part of your face. This is the area roughly between your eyes and your upper lip - your cheekbones, your eye sockets, the bridge of your nose, your upper jaw. "Dysplasia" is a medical term that simply means abnormal development or growth of tissue. Put them together, and midface dysplasia means the bones and soft tissues of your midface haven't grown in a typical way. That's it. That's the core of it. It's a structural situation, not a monster under the bed.
Think of your face like a building. The bones are the frame - the beams and supports that give everything its shape. The soft tissue - muscles,
