First things first: take a breath. If you're reading this, you've just been given a diagnosis that probably sounds strange, maybe even unbelievable. Metal allergy. It sounds like something that shouldn't be real, or something that only affects people who work in metal shops or wear cheap jewelry. But you're sitting here with this diagnosis, and your skin might be itchy, or your joints might ache, or you might have a rash that just won't quit. And the first question on your mind is almost certainly this: what is actually happening inside my body?

Let's start with the simple version, and then we'll dig a little deeper. A metal allergy is not like a food allergy — it's not going to make your throat close up. It's not like a bee sting allergy — you don't need an EpiPen for it. It's much more subtle and, in its own way, much more annoying.
