So. You or someone you love just heard the words "metabolic acidosis," and those words sound terrifying. They should not. At least, not yet. Right now, in this moment, the most important thing you can do is breathe. Because the name is scary, but the explanation is something you can handle. I promise.
Let's start with the word itself, because breaking it down makes it way less intimidating. "Acidosis" means your blood is more acidic than it should be. That is literally it. Your body has a very specific, very narrow range of acidity it likes to stay within, and acidosis means you've drifted outside that range on the high side. Not catastrophic. Not a cliff. A drift.
The word "metabolic" tells you about the cause. It separates this from other kinds of acidosis, like the kind you get from holding your breath for too long (which is more about your lungs).
