You just heard the word "chorioamnionitis" (say it with me: kor-ee-oh-am-nee-oh-NY-tis), and your brain probably did that thing where it stops processing and just plays a high-pitched tone. That's normal. It's a big word, it sounds terrifying, and it's attached to a pregnancy that you care about more than anything in the world. So let's start there: you are allowed to be scared. Now, let's break this down in plain human language, because that huge word is actually pretty simple when you take it apart.
"Chorio" refers to the chorion (COR-ee-on), which is one of the two thin, tough membranes that make up the amniotic sac — that bag of fluid your baby has been floating in like a cozy astronaut. "Amnion" (AM-nee-on) is the other membrane, the inner one that's right against the fluid. Together, they're like a bubble around your baby — a protective, warm, cushioned home.
