You just heard the words "Chlamydia pneumonia" and maybe your brain did what most brains do in that moment: it stopped working. Maybe you're thinking about the sexually transmitted infection (you can relax, it's not that — I promise, we'll get to it). Maybe you're thinking about pneumonia and picturing an old person in a hospital bed with tubes everywhere. Let me start with the most important thing you need to know: Chlamydia pneumonia is not the sexually transmitted infection. Not the one you know. It's a completely different bacterium with a similar-sounding name, and a big part of why you're confused is precisely because the name is almost identical. The bacterium that causes this lung infection is called Chlamydia pneumoniae — note the "pneumoniae" part, which means "of the lungs."
